Gloria Takla was born in Berlin, Germany.
She graduated in business and began her art education in Berlin
night school. She studied art at Western Wyoming College,
University of Alberta, Canada, and Roane State University,
Tennessee. She was a Master Class student of Hassel Smith at the
College of Notre Dame in Belmont, California. Her warm, vibrant
colors and expressionistic style show the influence of artists
Schmidt-Rottluff, the Canadian Group of Seven, and the Blue
Riders.
Since Gloria lives in San Mateo, California, you
will often find her painting outdoors at the coast or in the city.
She finds the scenery of California so beautiful and compelling
that she is only truly happy when she is putting her vision on
canvas in her unique way.
Statements by the artist:
“As I have been traveling extensively, my
subject matters are all unfolding like a picture book; special
moments, views bypassing, caught by my eye from a car window,
discarded or stored for later evaluation.”
“I paint the past—events that I have lived
through and places I have seen. I experience them first, then at a
later time reflect on them, feel them through, then my
interpretations of events and impressions are put on canvas.”
